Vocabulary 5

Adroit- expert; cleverly skillful 
ex. The NFL player is very adroit in football.

Amicable- showing goodwill, friendly
ex. The sincere person is amicable.

Averse- having a strong feeling of opposition; to oppose
ex. Republicans and Democrats could be averse towards each other.

Belligerent- warlike; aggressively hostile
ex. Angry people could be belligerent.

Benevolent- expressing goodwill, kindly feelings
ex. A charitable person is benevolent.
Cursory- going rapidly over something; to skim
ex. I'll look over my notes in a cursory manner right before a test.

Duplicity- to deceit,hypocrisy
ex. A con artist could talk to someone with duplicity.

Extol- to praise
ex. The kid was extolled for earning good grades.

Feasible- capable of being done, probable
ex. Earning good grades is feasible if one tries well enough.

Grimace- an ugly or contorted facial expression
ex. The villain had a grimace on his face, indicating a mischievous plot.

Holocaust- complete destruction 
ex. Hitler attempted a holocaust on the Jewish people.

Impervious- impenetrable
ex. The highly armored and well-guarded fort is impervious.

Impetus- a moving force; impulse
ex. The crashing wave was impetus.

Jeopardy- in danger
ex. The unstable house puts those who live in it in jeopardy.

Meticulous- precise; accurate
ex. An architect has to be meticulous with his sketches.

Nostalgia- a desire to return to a former, usually happier, time in one's life
ex. I have a nostalgic feeling when reminiscing about sophomore year.

Quintessence- the most perfect embodiment of something
ex. A singer's voice is the quintessence of his talent.

Retrogress- to move backwards
ex. The phone's capabilities retrogressed when some of its features were removed.

Scrutinize- to examine in detail; analyze
ex. The investigator scrutinized the scene of the crime.
Tepid- mild; with little force
ex. The hot sauce was tepid.
