Vocabulary 2

1. obesity: to be very overweight
ex. Being obese puts you at risk of having health problems.
2. accumulate: to gather or collect
ex. Eating a lot of junk food will accumulate into a lot of unwanted pounds.
3. mass: a body of coherent matter; bulk size or massiveness
ex. Being overweight gives you a bigger than average mass.
4. disease: any harmful condition
ex. You can catch a disease if you are in an unhealthy state.
5. diet: a particular selection of food
ex. His particular diet allowed him to lose weight.

6. prevalence: widespread
ex. Obesity has become prevalent.
7. stigma: shame; a stain as of one's reputation
ex. Eating fast food everyday has left the man with a stigma.
8. preventable: to keep from occurring
ex. Usually, being overweight is preventable.
9. adolescent: growing; youthful
ex. Many people gain weight during their adolescent stage.
10. cardiovascular: pertaining to, or affecting, the heart and blood vessels
ex. Obesity could lead to cardiovascular credits.
11. excessive: going beyond the usual or necessary limit
ex. Overweight people have excessive weight.
12. mechanism: an assembly of moving parts
ex. Our bodies are complex mechanisms.
13. sedentary: to take little exercise; to sit or rest a great deal
ex. Many overweight people are sedentary.
14. predispose: to give an inclination to beforehand
ex. Genetic factors might predispose a child to being overweight.
15. syndrome: a pattern of symptoms that indicate a disorder or disease
ex. The kid's syndrome pattern indicate that he's fat.
